Metacam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used for the treatment of joint pain, arthritis and musculo-skeletal pain in dogs, cats and horses.

Metacam is available in different forms, with chewable tablets (for dogs only) and oral liquid for dogs, cats and horses and is the number one choice of arthritis medicine, used by veterinary professionals nationwide. It can also be used to treat mild post-operation pain and swelling following a surgical procedure.

How is Metacam administered?

Metacam is administered orally through tablets or liquid and can also be given as an injection by a vet if required after surgery. We recommend Metacam tablets or oral suspension as its sweet honey flavour makes it enjoyable for your animal and easy to administer.

Always consult your veterinarian as they will always prescribe the most appropriate dose for your pet.

What can I expect from the Metacam Treatment?

Metacam is used to control the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis so you should expect an improvement in their mobility and movement. Whilst the result varies from dog to dog, most see an improvement in a matter of days. If use of Metacam is discontinued, the pain and swelling in your pets joints may return.

What are the side effects of Metacam?

Metacam does carry a few known side effects, with the most common being irritation of the intestines, which can cause vomiting and soft or loose stools. Occasionally it can cause stomach ulcers or non-fatal bleeding in the intestines, although these are common side effects that occur in most anti-inflammatory medication and happen a lot less with Metacam compared to the majority of alternatives on the market.

In some rare cases, it has been known to cause damage to the kidneys and liver, especially if the medication has been wrongly administered by giving an incorrect dose or using the medicine on the wrong type of animal. If any side effects occur, use of the medicine must be stopped and your veterinarian should be contacted immediately.
